What is quiet firing? (Also called silent firing)

A workplace pattern with a name — and a way out.

Quiet firing — also known as silent firing — is when a manager makes your job miserable or stuck on purpose, hoping you'll quit on your own. No termination meeting, no severance, no paper trail. Just enough pressure, day after day, until you walk away voluntarily.

It works because it's deniable. There's rarely one moment you can point to — just a slow squeeze designed to look like nothing happened at all.

Older workers and anyone worried AI is being used as cover for a layoff face this even more often.

Why they want YOU to be the one who quits

It's not personal — it's math. Employers work to make employees resign — often called constructive dismissal or managing you out the door — because how you leave determines what you walk away with.

If you resign voluntarily...

The older worker: a pattern with a name

It often starts before you're even hired. Many companies are quietly not hiring older workers in the first place — screening out resumes that look "overqualified" or too experienced. Once you're on staff, the same pattern continues: you interview the "young" candidate, train them... and soon they're promoted while you get little or nothing.
